LOWELL, Mass. – In a battle between two teams tied for second in the Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer standings, No. 14 Southern New Hampshire University used a pair of goals by Ruben Resendes (Fall River, Mass.) to top UMass Lowell 3-1 Wednesday afternoon at soggy Cushing Field. The Penmen improved their win streak to nine games and are now 12-2 and 9-2 in the NE-10, while the River Hawks saw a seven-game win streak snapped and are now 8-5 and 8-3 in the league.
Southern New Hampshire staked itself to a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute. Jayme Kapinos (Ludlow, Mass.) delivered a feed that was knocked home by Jordan Branco (Norton, Mass.) for Branco's sixth goal of the season.
Resendes scored twice for Southern New Hampshire in a span of 3:52 in the second half to extend the Penmen lead to 3-0. His first goal at the 56:51 mark came on a free kick just outside the box. Resendes' second goal came in the 61st minute when he tapped in a cross from Branco.
UMass Lowell got on the board in the 63rd minute when Bruno Bonicontro scored on a through ball from Homero Morais for his third goal of the season. It was the first goal allowed by the Penmen since September 24, a span of six straight shutouts and 604:42 of game action.
Joey Kapinos (Ludlow, Mass.) made six saves for Southern New Hampshire, while River Hawk keeper Chris Maierle made three stops, with UML also recording a team save. Both teams took 13 shots on the afternoon, with the hosts generating an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Sunday afternoon when it travels to New Haven for a 2:00 match.
