MANCHESTER, N.H. –Michael Holton, Jr. totaled 16 points and six rebounds to lead Saint Michael's College to a 62-52 win over Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 men's basketball Wednesday night at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The Purple Knights improved to 12-12 overall and 10-10 in the NE-10 with the victory, while the Penmen are now 10-14 and 6-14 in the league.
Holton, a freshman, finished 6-13 from the field to lead three Saint Michael's players in double figures. Tyler Schilling totaled 14 points and nine rebounds for the Purple Knights, who also got 10 points and seven assists from Nate Birr.
Cory Vejraska (Alachua, Fla.) paced Southern New Hampshire with 12 points, while C.J. Marriro (Boston, Mass.) and Tory Stapleton (Rahway, N.J.) each registered 10 points and six rebounds. Greg DeSantis (Trumbull, Conn.) added nine points.
Saint Michael's scored the game's first seven points and opened an 11-2 lead 3:30 into the game following a Schilling three. The Penmen cut the lead to four, 15-11, with 12:21 to go in the first half on a Marcus Matthews (Valley Stream, N.Y.) basket, but the Purple Knights used an 11-0 run and a pair of free throws by Birr with 6:52 left made it 26-11. SNHU got it down to seven, 28-21, with just under four minutes left on a Matthews basket, but Saint Michael's took a 34-22 lead into the locker room.
The Purple Knights opened up a 45-27 lead four minutes into the second half following a three by Tom Ward. Saint Michael's maintained a double digit lead the rest of the way and opened up a pair of 20 point leads, the last with 5:07 left on a layup by Derek Knutty. SNHU closed the game on a 10-0 run.
Saint Michael's, which outrebounded Southern New Hampshire 37-32, held the Penmen to just 35.7% shooting for the contest, including a 2-21 effort behind the arc. The Purple Knights shot 47.1% from the field for the contest.
Southern New Hampshire plays its final road contest of the regular season Saturday when it travels to Stonehill College for a 3:30 contest.
