Baseball Drops Two Extra Inning Games

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –The Southern New Hampshire University baseball team dropped a pair of one-run extra inning games Friday, falling to The College of Saint Rose 8-7 in 10 innings in a non-conference contest and 3-2 to Palm Beach Atlantic University in another 10-inning tilt.  The Penmen wrap up their Florida trip at 8-8 overall after going 4-4 in the Sunshine State.

In the opener, Saint Rose broke a 7-7 tie with a run in the top of the 10th.  With two outs, Ryan Price worked a walk, and following a single by Garett Keenan, scored when Grant Smith reached on an error.

Trailing 7-6 entering the bottom of the ninth, the Penmen tied the game when an Albert Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) double scored Zachary Robins (Westford, Mass.).

The Penmen trailed 7-2 when they scored four times in the bottom of the sixth.  Matt Boulter (Wrentham, Mass.) hit a two-out triple that plated Stanton and Bobby Wronski (Arlington, Mass.).  Boulter would score on a double by Chris O'Neil (Chelmsford, Mass.), while O'Neil scored on a single by Jon Massad (Shrewsbury, Mass.).

The Penmen scored their other two runs in the fourth.  Stanton, who was hit by a pitch with one out, scored when Boulter reached on an error.  O'Neil would double to bring in Stanton to make it 5-2.  Saint Rose plated four runs in the first and another in the second to build a 5-0 lead.

Stanton and Boulter each had a pair of hits for SNHU in the opener as the Golden Knights outhit the Penmen 11-7.  Massad took the loss for SNHU, working the 10th.  Starter David Gibson (Hanover, Mass.) went 4.2 innings and allowed seven hits and six runs (four earned).  He struck out three while walking three.  Alex Powers (Brewster, Mass.) worked three innings of relief and allowed just one hit while fanning four.

Against Palm Beach Atlantic, the Sailfish scraped together a run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th.  Jorge Chavarria reached on a two-out single and scored when Luis Meija singled.  Chavarria advanced to third and scored on a Penmen error to end the ballgame.

The Sailfish took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third, but Southern New Hampshire would plate single runs in the fourth and sixth.  In the fourth, Jamie Wollerman (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) worked a bases-loaded walk that brought in O'Neil after he led off the inning with a single.  In the sixth, back-to-back singles by Stanton and Juan Amador (Derry, N.H.) brought in Stanton, who scored after a PBA error.

Stanton and Amador finished with two hits apiece as Southern New Hampshire outhit Palm Beach Atlantic 8-6.  Tyler Gauthier (Lynn, Mass.) started and went five innings and struck out six while allowing four hits and two runs (one earned).  Garrett Jewell (Alexandria, N.H.), Zach LeBarron (Bennington, Vt.) and Brad Monroe (Hampton Falls, N.H.) combined for three innings of hitless relief, with each registering two strikeouts in an inning of work.  Ryan Walfield (Stratford, N.H.) took the loss, allowing two hits in 1.2 innings of work while fanning three.

Southern New Hampshire is slated to return to action on March 17 when they travel to American International College for a 3:30 non-conference contest.
