UMass Lowell Rallies Past Baseball 9-7

UMass Lowell scored four times in the top of the ninth en route to a 9-7 victory over Southern New Hampshire University on Sunday afternoon in a Northeast-10 baseball matchup at Penmen Field. The River Hawks improved to 18-3 overall and 5-0 in the NE-10, while the Penmen are now 9-11 and 0-3 in the conference.

Down 7-5 entering the ninth, UMass Lowell loaded the bases with one out. After Sean Burns delivered an RBI infield single and Cam Kneeland worked an RBI walk to tie it, Rob Noe reached on an error which allowed two more to score and gave the River Hawks the lead.

SNHU outhit UMass Lowell 13-12 on the afternoon, led by Matt Boulter (Wrentham, Mass.) with three hits. Tim Rines (Merrimack, N.H.), Jamie Wollerman (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.), Robert Wronski (Arlington, Mass.) and Chris O'Neil (Chelmsford, Mass.) each had two hits apiece.

Kneeland led UMass Lowell with three hits and three runs batted in.

Freshman Junior Mendez (Patchogue, N.Y.) started and went 5.1 innings for the Penmen, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out seven. Junior Garrett Jewell (Alexandria, N.H.) took the loss after allowing three runs in three innings of relief. He struck out five.

The Penmen took a 6-1 lead after a five-run fifth inning, as Boulter delivered a two-run double and O'Neil hit a three-run home run, his third of the year. The River Hawks responded with three runs in the top of the sixth to make it a 6-4 game. SNHU added another in the seventh and UMass Lowell tacked on a run in the eighth.

UMass Lowell jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Penmen tied the game in the bottom of the second when it took advantage of three River Hawk errors for their first run of the game.

The Penmen return to action Wednesday when they travel to UMass Lowell for a 3:30 p.m. contest at LeLacheur Park.
