Baseball Rally at Nova Southeastern Falls Short

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –Visiting Southern New Hampshire University scored three times in the top of the ninth but their rally fell short as Nova Southeastern University held on for a 7-6 baseball victory at NSU Baseball Complex Tuesday night.  The Sharks improved to 11-6 overall, while the Penmen are 5-5 on the season.

Tim Rines (Merrimack, N.H.) got the Penmen rally started with a one-out single to right.  The next batter, Albert Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) walked.  Following an out, Rines would score from second on a throwing error on the NSU catcher, with Stanton moving to second.  SNHU would load the bases, as Matt Boulter (Wrentham, Mass.) was hit by a pitch and Chris O'Neil (Chelmsford, Mass.) singled.

The next batter, Kevin Spatkowski (Bristol, Conn.) reached on an error, allowing Boulter and Stanton to score and O'Neil to advance to third as the tying run.  Jon Massad (Shrewsbury, Mass.) flied out to end the game.

The Penmen jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second.  Boulter worked a leadoff walk and scored on a triple down the right field line by O'Neil.  O'Neil would come home on a double to the gap in left-center by Massad.  Nova Southeastern would score three times in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-2 lead.

Trailing 5-2 after six, the Penmen would pick up a run in the seventh.  Jamie Wollerman (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) led off the inning with a single and scored on a Boulter single up the middle.  The Sharks would extend their lead in the bottom of the eighth with a pair of runs.

Rines and Stanton led the Penmen with three hits apiece as Southern New Hampshire outhit the Sharks 12-8.  Zach LeBarron (Bennington, Vt.) took the loss for the Penmen, scattering five hits in six innings of work and fanning four.  All five of his runs were unearned as SNHU was harmed by four errors.  Alex Powers (Brewster, Mass.) worked two innings of relief.

SNHU takes on Felician College in a 1:00 doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.
