Softball Splits Twinbill in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla.—The Southern New Hampshire University softball team split a pair of games at the National Training Center games in Clermont, Fla. Today, posting a 2-1 win over Post University before dropping a 13-2 decision to Seton Hill University.  With the results, the Penmen fall to 2-10 on the season.  Seton Hill improves to 2-1, while Post drops to 1-7. 

In the first game of the day, the Penmen would find themselves trailing 1-0 after Post's Amy Mantha doubled, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, and tagged up on a fly ball to right field in the bottom of the fourth inning. 

The Penmen would post a two-run comeback in the top of fifth inning.  Tesia Stanasek (Blackstone, Mass.), the first batter of the inning for SNHU, would reach on an error by the pitcher.  The next batter of the inning, Morgan Farmer (Kingston, N.H.) would hit a triple and score Stanasek.  Farmer would then score on a groundout by Cara Daly (Plainville. Mass.) to take the 2-1 advantage.  The two teams would remain scoreless for the final two innings of play. 

Katie Raymond (Monson, Mass.) started the game in the circle and gave up three hits and one earned run in three innings of work while walking one and striking out one.  Dolores Mattice (Schnectady, N.Y.) pitched the final four innings, sacrificing six hits, no runs, and posting one walk. 

In the nightcap, the Penmen took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Kate Stanley (Kingston, Mass.) doubled, advanced to third on a fly ball, and scored on an illegal pitch by Seton Hill pitcher Caitlyn Kamalich.  Seton Hill would even the score at 1-1 in the second inning, and would own a commanding 9-1 lead after the top of the third inning.  The Penmen would tally another run in the bottom of the third as Jessica Berardi (Raynham, Mass.) singled and scored on a double by Kelsea Cheney (Abington, Mass.).

Jen Garloff (Lebanon, Pa.) pitched 2.2 innings and took the loss for the Penmen, surrendering five hits and six runs while walking three and striking out one.  Kelsey Griffin (Scarborough, Mass.) would enter in relief and give up five hits, four earned runs, two walks and strike out one in 1.1 innings of work.  Natalie Casey (Burlington, Mass.) would make her first appearance in the circle to close the game for the Penmen. 

Southern New Hampshire is idle until Thursday, March 17, it travels to Dowling College for a nonconference twinbill.  The first game is slated to start for 3:00 p.m.
