Penmen Pitching Shuts Down Saint Rose

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALBANY, N.Y. – Strong pitching performances by Derrick Sylvester (Franklin, N.H.) and Brad Monroe (Hampton Falls, N.H.) (pictured) led Southern New Hampshire University to a Northeast-10 baseball sweep of The College of Saint Rose by scores of 5-1 and 5-0 Saturday at Bob Bellizzi Field.  The Penmen improved to 18-15 overall and 6-7 in the NE-10, while the Golden Knights are now 12-19 and 6-10 in the league.

In the opener, Sylvester picked up his first win of the season, allowing three hits and one run in a complete-game effort while striking out five and walking three.  Bobby Wronski (Arlington, Mass.) and Kevin Spatkowski (Bristol, Conn.) led the Penmen with two hits apiece in the opener.

The Penmen broke a scoreless game with three runs in the third.  With two away, Tim Rines (Merrimack, N.H.) doubled to center field then scored on a pair of wild pitches.  Jamie Wollerman (Hasbrouck, Heights, N.J.) walked and eventually scored after back-to-back singles by Albert Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) and Chris O'Neil (Chelmsford, Mass.).  Stanton would score the third run on a passed ball.  Saint Rose got a run back in the bottom half of the frame when Brandon Jones reached on a one-out single and scored when Jesse Burba grounded out.

Southern New Hampshire tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the ninth.  Jon Massad (Shrewsbury, Mass.) reached with two outs on an error, and the next batter, Spatkowski, walked.  Both runners would score when Juan Amador (Derry, N.H.) doubled down the left field line.

In the nightcap, Monroe shut down the Golden Knights, striking out 10 batters without issuing a walk and allowing just four hits.  O'Neil, Spatkowski and Matt Boulter (Wrentham, Mass.) each finished with two hits, while Jon Minucci (Madison, Conn.) had a two-run home run in the seventh.

SNHU got on the board in the third when Spatkowski worked a leadoff walk and eventually scored on a Wollerman double down the right field line.  The guests made it 2-0 in the sixth when O'Neil hit a two-out double to the gap in right center and scored on a Boulter single.

In the seventh, Minucci's home run also plated Spatkowski, who had reached on an infield single.  The final Penmen run came in the eighth as O'Neil led off with a single.  After stealing second and moving to third on a Boulter base it, O'Neil scored when Boulter was caught stealing second.

Southern New Hampshire, which has won nine of its last 11 games, returns to action Sunday afternoon when it travels to Saint Anselm College for a 2:00 contest.
