BRIARCLIFF, N.Y.—The Southern New Hampshire University softball held off a seventh inning rally by Pace University in the nightcap to post a 7-5 win in the second game of Sunday's Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader. The Setters posted an 8-4 win in the opener. With the split, the Penmen set their record to 14-20 overall and 12-8 in Northeast-10 Conference play, while the Setters now stand at 16-19 overall and 8-11 in league play.
Kelsea Cheney (Abington, Mass.) finished 8-8 at the plate over both games, including two singles, a double, and a two-run homerun in the nightcap. The Penmen scored four runs in the third inning, one in the fifth, and two in the seventh while sacrificing two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to the Setters, holding on for the 7-5 win. Cara Daly (Plainville, Mass.), Elena Anderson (Salem, Wisc.) and Kate Stanley (Kingston, Mass.) all connected for two hits apiece.
Amanda Barton (Franklin, N.H.) earned her first win of the season in the circle for the Penmen, giving up eight hits and two earned runs in 5.1 innings of work. She added two walks and two strikeouts on the day. Dolores Mattice (Schenectady, N.Y.) earned the save, giving up three runs and four hits in 1.2 innings of work.
Kelsey Griffin (Scarborough, Maine) took the loss in the opener, sacrificing 13 hits and eight runs (seven earned) in a complete-game effort. The senior pitcher struck out three while not allowing a walk.
Cheney again led the Penmen at the plate, going 4-4 with a single and three doubles. Christy Jenkins (Hudson, Mass.) also added two hits for the Penmen, who combined for a total of ten hits in the opener.
Four different Pace players tallied two hits in game one, while all nine members of the Setters' lineup connected for at least one hit.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action on Wednesday, April 20, when it hosts Franklin Pierce University at 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. as part of SNHU's third-annual game under temporary lights.
