MANCHESTER, N.H.—James Sabino (Danvers, Mass.) scored three second-half goals to help the Southern New Hampshire University men's lacrosse team rally from a two-goal halftime deficit to post an 11-8 Northeast-10 Conference victory on Tuesday evening at Larkin Field. The win marks the second in a row for the Penmen, who improve to 4-7 overall and 3-5 in NE-10 play, while the loss drops the visiting Ravens to 3-8 overall and 1-7 in league play.
The Penmen would find themselves down 2-0 entering the second quarter. The Ravens would extend their lead to 3-0 early in the second quarter before SNHU's Andrew Brown (Marshfield, Mass.) would connect for the Penmen's first goal. Both teams would score two more goals apiece to round out the half with the 5-3 advantage going to the Ravens.
Sabino and Marc Novaco (Chelmsford, Mass.) would start the third quarter with back-to-back goals to even the score at 5-5. The two teams would trade goals for the rest of the half, carrying the 7-7 tie into the final quarter of play.
The Penmen would outscore the Ravens 4-1 in the final frame to clench the 11-8 victory. In addition to Sabino's three goals, Keith Merluzzo (Billerica, Mass.) added two goals and three assists to the Penmen offense, while Brown and Novaco each added two goals and Mike Balaschi (Kingston, Mass.) and Gary McKay (Billerica, Mass.) added single goals. Greg Reynolds (Scituate, Mass.) dished out two assists for SNHU.
The Ravens were led by Edward Noonan, who tallied three goals and an assist in the loss. Ryan Dintaman added three goals, while Jack Scanlan and Brendan Cahill added single tallies.
Brendan O'Brien (Hopkinton, Mass.) earned the win in net for the Penmen posting 14 saves in the complete-game effort. Tim Izzo took the loss for Franklin Pierce and recorded nine saves.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action on Saturday as the Penmen travel to Garden City, N.Y. for a 1:00 p.m. Northeast-10 Conference matchup with Adelphi University.
