Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MANCHESTER, N.H. –The Southern New Hampshire University baseball team took both ends of a Northeast-10 doubleheader from the University of New Haven Saturday, posting a 9-7 win in the opener then holding on for a 4-3 win in the nightcap.  The Penmen, who have now won five in a row, improved to 14-13 overall and 3-5 in the NE-10, while the Chargers, who are ranked No. 7 in the latest NCBWA East Region poll, fall to 16-10 and 5-5 in the league.

In the opener, the Penmen turned a 5-3 deficit into a 9-5 lead with a six-run sixth inning.  Albert Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) and Chris O'Neil (Chelmsford, Mass.) reached on back-to-back singles, while Matt Boulter (Wrentham, Mass.) loaded the bases when he reached on an error on his sacrifice attempt.  Jon Massad (Shrewsbury, Mass.) then delivered a double to deep left that scored Stanton and O'Neil.

The Penmen would again load the bases as Kevin Spatkowski (Bristol, Conn.) walked.  The next batter, Juan Amador (Derry, N.H.) hit a grand slam to left to make it 9-5.  New Haven would tack on single runs in the seventh and eighth but got no closer.

SNHU took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second.  In the first Tim Rines (Merrimack, N.H.) led off the game with a double and scored on a double steal.  In the second, Massad worked a one-out walk and scored on an Amador double.  The other Southern New Hampshire run came in the fifth when Spatkowski led off with a double and came home on a Rines sac fly.

New Haven scored twice in the third and fourth to take a 4-2 lead, then added a run in the fifth to make it 5-2.

Amador finished with five RBI in the opener, going 2-2, while seven of SNHU's nine players had one hit.  New Haven outhit the Penmen 12-8.  Bryant Gauthier (Lynn, Mass.) earned the win in four innings of relief, allowing six hits and two runs but fanning seven.  Alex Powers (Brewster, Mass.) struck out the side in the ninth for the save.

In the nightcap, both teams scored single runs in the first, with SNHU taking a 2-1 lead in the third.  Amador led off the third with a single through the left side and scored on a double by Stanton.  The Penmen upped their lead to 3-1 in the fifth, with Amador leading off by getting hit by a pitch.  After a bunt single by Rines, Amador scored on a groundout by Jamie Wollerman (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.).

New Haven pulled within 3-2 in the sixth, but the Penmen tacked on an insurance run in the eighth.  Stanton drilled a double to the gap in right center and scored on a single by Boulter.

The Chargers would pull within 4-3 in the ninth, scoring when Ryan Brockett reached on a bases-loaded error.  Powers would pick up his second save of the afternoon by getting Shane O'Connell to fly out to end the game.

Rines and Stanton each finished with two hits in game two as both teams collected six hits.  Sophomore southpaw Timothy Flight (Portsmouth, R.I.) upped his record to 4-1, allowing four hits and two runs (one earned) in eight innings, fanning eight.  Powers worked the ninth.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action on Sunday when it travels to No. 13/21 Franklin Pierce for a 1:00 contest.
