WEST HAVEN, Conn.—The University of New Haven softball team posted two wins over the Southern New Hampshire University Penmen in Northeast-10 Conference action on Sunday morning by scores of 3-2 in nine innings and 2-0. With the losses, the Penmen fall to 19-25 overall and 17-13 in NE-10 play, while the wins boost the Chargers to 32-15 overall and 20-10 in league play.
The Penmen would score first in the opener, tallying two runs in the top of the third inning as Amanda Barton (Franklin, N.H.) led off the inning with a double, followed by three-straight singles by Elena Anderson (Salem, Wisc.), Kelsea Cheney (Abington, Mass.) and Cara Daly (Plainville, Mass.). Cheney and Daly were both credited with an RBI to give the Penmen the 2-0 advantage.
New Haven would tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning as Chelsea Harold singled and advanced to second as Shannon Angher drew a walk. Both runners would score on an fielding error to force extra innings.
Both teams would battle through two scoreless extra innings before New Haven's Brooke Fisher would draw a walk in the bottom of the ninth inning, advanced to second and then third on back-to-back plays to first, and then scored from third base on another Penmen fielding error.
Kelsey Griffin (Scarborough, Maine) took the loss in the circle for the Penmen, scattering four hits, three runs (zero earned) and four walks while striking out two in 8.2 innings of work. Daly led the Penmen at the plate with a team-best two hits.
New Haven pitcher Micah Stonesifer threw a one-hitter in the nightcap to lead the Chargers to a 2-0 shutout win. Morgan Farmer (Kingston, N.H.) connected for the lone Penmen hit, a single to right field. Dolores Mattice (Schenectady, N.Y.) took the loss in the circle, scattering five hits, two earned runs and two walks while striking out three.
Southern New Hampshire will enter postseason play on Tuesday, May 3 as the eighth seed and will travel to face No. 5 UMass Lowell at 3:00 p.m.
