POMONA, N.Y. – No. 9/28 Southern New Hampshire University swept a baseball doubleheader from host Saint Thomas Aquinas College Saturday afternoon, posting a 5-1 win in the opener before recording a 7-0 victory in the nightcap at Provident Bank Park Saturday afternoon.  The Penmen, who are also ranked No. 1 in the latest NCBWA East Region poll, improve to 15-1, while the Spartans, who are ranked eighth in the East Region, saw an eight-game win streak snapped and are now 10-6 on the season.

In the opener, SNHU got on the board first with three runs in the top of the third.  After the Penmen put two men on base via STAC errors, Al Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) belted a three-run home run.  In the seventh, Southern New Hampshire tacked on a run when Bryan Toland (Wildwood, N.J.) worked a one-out walk and scored on a groundout by Brendan O'Brien (East Bridgewater, Mass.).  Jon Minucci (Madison, Conn.) provided SNHU's other run with a solo home run in the top of the ninth.

Saint Thomas Aquinas ruined SNHU's shutout bid in the bottom of the ninth when a sacrifice fly by Frank Salerno plated Matt Marotta.

Stanton finished with two of SNHU's five hits in the opener.  Jon Massad (Shrewsbury, Mass.) earned the win on the mound, working five innings of relief and allowing two hits and the one unearned run while fanning five.  Zach LeBarron (Bennington, Vt.) started and allowed just two hits in his four innings while recording three strikeouts.  Joe Ferrara took the loss for STAC, allowing four runs, though just one was earned, in 6.1 innings on the hill.

In the nightcap Southern New Hampshire scored all of its runs in the first three innings, plating two in the first, three in the second and two in the third.  In the first, a double by Matt Boulter (Wrentham, Mass.) scored Stanton, while Boulter would later score on a bases-loaded walk worked by Minucci.  In the second, SNHU scored two runs when Boulter reached on a fielders' choice, with Boulter later stealing home on a double steal with Andy Lalli (Lakeville, Mass.).  In the third O'Brien delivered a two-run single that plated Toland and Minucci.

Kevin Spatkowski (Bristol, Conn.) finished 3-3 at the plate in the nightcap, with O'Brien and Minucci also recording a pair of hits.  Tim Flight (Portsmouth, R.I.) went the distance in the seven-inning affair, scattering nine hits while striking out three.

SNHU and Saint Thomas Aquinas meet Sunday for another noon doubleheader at Provident Bank Park.
