No. 7 Baseball Doubles Up AIC Twice

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – No. 7 Southern New Hampshire University swept a Northeast-10 baseball doubleheader from American International College by identical 4-2 scores Saturday afternoon at AIC Park.  The Penmen, who have won four in a row, improved to 19-2, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 5-8 on the season.

In the opener, AIC scored twice in the bottom of the second to take a 2-0 lead.  A double down the left field line by Lucas Vallas would drive in both runs.  Southern New Hampshire got a run back in the top of the third when Jon Minucci (Madison, Conn.) homered to left to lead off the frame.

The Penmen scored twice in the top of the sixth then added an insurance run in the seventh.  In the sixth Jamie Wollerman (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) singled to the gap in right center to bring home Kevin Spatkowski (Bristol, Conn.) and Al Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.).  Spatkowski had worked a one-out walk while Stanton followed that with a single.  In the seventh Brendan O'Brien's (East Bridgewater, Mass.) double with two away brought in Bryan Toland (Wildwood, N.J.) who singled through the left side with one out.

Toland and O'Brien each had two hits for SNHU in the opener as the Penmen outhit the Yellow Jackets 7-5.  Brad Monroe (Hampton, N.H.) upped his record to 4-1 on the mound with his complete game effort, allowing five hits and striking out a career-high 14 without issuing a walk.

In the nightcap, Spatkowski gave the Penmen a 2-0 lead in the second inning when his opposite-field single down the right field line brought home O'Brien and Riley Palmer (Goffstown, N.H.).  The Yellow Jackets made it 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth when a Cam MacDonald single brought in Julian Concepcion.

Southern New Hampshire scored two more times in the sixth.  Minucci, after walking and stealing second, scored on a Toland single after the AIC left fielder bobbled the ball.  Palmer would then bring in Toland with a single through the left side.  American International's other run came when Nicholas Devine led off the ninth with a home run to left.

Spatkowski finished 3-5 at the plate in the nightcap while Minucci also had a pair of hits.  Southpaw Zach LeBarron (Bennington, Vt.) (pictured) earned his first win of the season on the mound, allowing just four hits and one run in seven innings of work while fanning nine.  Alex Powers (Brewster, Mass.) worked the final two innings to pick up the save, fanning two while allowing three hits.

SNHU is slated to return to action Sunday when it travels to Assumption College for a noon Northeast-10 twinbill.
