Women's Tennis Blanks Adelphi, Advances to Northeast-10 Title Tilt Sunday

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Third-seeded Southern New Hampshire University blanked second-seeded Adelphi University 5-0 in the semifinals of the Northeast-10 Women's Tennis Championship Friday afternoon.  The Penmen, who advance to Sunday's Northeast-10 championship match for the third straight season, improve to 17-5, while the Panthers, who are ranked fourth in the East Region and likely to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship, are now 16-4.

SNHU will face a familiar foe as it attempts to win its third-straight NE-10 Tournament title, as it will travel to Stonehill College for a 1:00 match Sunday afternoon.  Stonehill, the tournament's second seed, dispatched fourth-seeded Saint Michael's College 5-0 on Friday.  The Penmen and Skyhawks have squared off in each of the last two NE-10 championship matches, with Southern New Hampshire triumphant both times.  SNHU posted a 5-2 win at Stonehill in 2010 to earn its first-ever tourney title, then again posted a 5-2 win in 2011 in a match it hosted in Goffstown, N.H.

Friday's victory avenged an earlier 5-4 setback to Adelphi on March 31, a loss that snapped Southern New Hampshire's 37-match Northeast-10 regular-season win streak.  That streak was the third-longest in NE-10 annals.

Southern New Hampshire jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles, with Northeast-10 Player of the Year Alena Mukdaprakorn (Hartford, Conn.) and NE-10 Rookie of the Year Diana Vamvakitis (Wading River, N.Y.) posting a 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles.  Jamie Hann (Westhampton, N.Y.) and Samantha Jean (Bedford, N.H.) were 8-3 winners at second doubles, while Kirsten Jean (Bedford, N.H.) and Amanda Albuquerque (Weymouth, Mass.) were 8-4 winners at No. 3.

Mukdaprakorn and Vamvakitis sealed the match in singles, with Mukdaprakorn posting a 6-1, 6-2 win over Maria Toft at No. 1, while Vamvakitis won 6-0, 6-0 at second singles.

Should SNHU prevail to win its third-straight NE-10 Tournament title Sunday, it would be the first team to win three straight since Bryant University, now a member of the Division I Northeast Conference, won five in a row from 2004-08.
