Hawks Outduel Baseball 3-2

Box Score

MANCHESTER, N.H. – A line single by Saint Anselm College's Andrew Chandler in the bottom of the eighth broke a 2-2 tie and lifted the Hawks to a 3-2 Northeast-10 baseball victory against No. 12 Southern New Hampshire University Tuesday afternoon at Sullivan Park.  The Hawks improved to 21-19-2 and 9-4-1 in the NE-10's Northeast Division, while the Penmen now stand 33-10 and 9-7 in divisional play.

Saint Anselm scraped together the winning run with two away in the eighth.  Jeff Criscuolo lifted a double to the track in left, and after advancing to third on a wild pitch, scampered home when Chandler lined a 1-2 pitch up the middle.

The Hawks, who had dropped their first two games against the Penmen this season, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when a broken bat bloop single by Dan Lagasse plated Richie Manzi and Daniel DeCoste.  Southern New Hampshire tied the game in the fourth when Jon Minucci (Madison, Conn.) belted his seventh home run of the season to straightaway center, also scoring Greg Pezzuto (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.), who led off with an infield single.

Timothy Cooney earned the win for Saint Anselm, working 2/3 of an inning of relief in the eighth, while James Farrington worked a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts to pick up his sixth save of 2012.  Tyler Gauthier (Lynn, Mass.) took the loss, working 1.1 innings out of the bullpen.

Both teams' aces earned the start Tuesday but did not factor in the decision.  Saint Anselm's John Healy went 7.1 innings and fanned 10 while scattering six hits.  Tim Flight (Portsmouth, R.I.) went six innings for Southern New Hampshire, notching 10 strikeouts while allowing eight hits.  Pezzuto and Kevin Spatkowski (Bristol, Conn.) led the Penmen with two hits apiece.

SNHU returns to action Wednesday afternoon when it travels to Saint Michael's College for a 3:30 contest.
