No. 12 Baseball Snaps Slide, Edges Saint Michael's 3-2 in 10

Box Score

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Kevin Spatkowski's (Bristol, Conn.) two out bunt single in the top of the 10th inning broke a 2-2 tie and lifted No. 12 Southern New Hampshire University to a 3-2 Northeast-10 baseball victory over Saint Michael's College at Doc Jacobs Field Wednesday afternoon.  The win snapped a four-game slide for the Penmen as they improved to 34-10 and 10-7 in the NE-10 Northeast Division, while the Purple Knights fall to 9-25 and 2-13 in divisional play.

Bryan Toland (Wildwood, N.J.) started the rally when he worked a one-out walk in the 10th inning.  After a strikeout, Toland moved to third on a single to center by Brendan O'Brien (East Bridgewater, Mass.).  Spatkowski, with a 1-1 count, laid down a bunt that Saint Michael's reliever Austin Ziskie tried to let roll foul, but stopped in fair territory, allowing Toland to score what turned out to be the winning run.

Saint Michael's jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Nicky Elderton belted a two-run home run that scored Alec Tice, who had reached on a fielders' choice.  The Penmen plated two runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game.  A Riley Palmer (Goffstown, N.H.) sac fly to left plated Jon Minucci (Madison, Conn.), who was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame.  O'Brien knocked in the second run when his single scored Toland, who singled.  Both Toland and Minucci moved into scoring position on a Purple Knight wild pitch.

Junior Mendez (Patchogue, N.Y.), seeing his first action since April 14, went the 10-inning distance on the mound for Southern New Hampshire, scattering six hits and fanning 10 with just one walk.  Ziskie took the loss working the 10th, while Saint Michael's starter Andrew Kelley went the first nine frames, striking out nine while surrendering just three hits.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action Thursday afternoon when it travels to Saint Anselm College for a 3:30 game.
