Volleyball Splits Doubleheader to Earn First Win of the Season

KUTZTOWN, Pa.- The Southern New Hampshire volleyball team dropped a non-conference matchup to the University of the Sciences by a score of 3-2 in the first game of today's action. The Penmen would later notch the first win of the season with a 3-0 sweep over Virginia Union University. With today's results, the Penmen are 1-2 overall.

 

In the first match of the day between University of the Sciences  and SNHU, University of the Sciences posted game scores of 25-23, 20-25, 25-13, 25-21, and 15-10, to take the 3-2 win.

 

The Penmen were led by Erica Solomon (Islip Terrace, N.Y.), who posted 11 kills while digging up eight balls for SNHU. Freshman Emma Houlihan (Shoreham, N.Y.) was also an offensive presence while totaling a match-high 13 kills. Defensively, Houlihan had five digs and added four service aces on the day.

 

SNHU also got strong offensive play from Ashlee Daoust (Brookline, N.H.) who tallied 10 kills along with three assists. She also added six digs for the Penmen. Kendra Mikuta (Orland Park, Ill.) had 40 assists to lead all players, along with 14 digs. Renee Trottier (Biddeford, Maine) led the Penmen defensively with 25 digs.

 

Desirae Lair and Caitlyn Crawford both tallied 11 kills for the Devils. Stacey Wooden also contributed strong defensive play while totaling a match-high 28 digs.

 

The second game of the day against Virginia Union University, SNHU posted scores of 25-16, 25-12, and 25-15 to earn the first win of the season.

 

Freshman Maeghan Higgins (Hesperia, Calif.) was the offensive force in the match while totaling a match-high 11 kills for the Penmen. She also added eight digs defensively. Daoust would finish with 13 digs, four kills, and two service aces, while Houlihan added seven kills and three digs.  Mikuta aided the Penmen with 17 assists and adding four digs.

 

The Panthers were led by Kristin Madison who totaled seven digs on the day, while setter Demi Schrader added 17 assists for Virginia Union.

 

The Penmen return to action Wednesday, September 5 when they travel to Assumption College for a 7:00 non-conference match.
