Box Score 2 NEW LONDON, Conn. – Seventh-ranked Southern New Hampshire University swept a Northeast-10 baseball doubleheader from The College of Saint Rose by scores of 4-1 and 5-4 Saturday at Mitchell College's Alumni Field Saturday afternoon. The Penmen extended their win streak to eight and are now 16-3 overall and 2-0 in the NE-10, while the Golden Knights are 3-16 and 0-2.
In the opener Andrew Pezzuto (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) went 2-4 with a double, a home run and three runs batted in while Al Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) was 2-4 and drove in SNHU's other run. Junior Mendez (Patchogue, N.Y.) upped his record to 4-0 as he allowed six hits and one run, his first earned run of the season, striking out 13 while walking two. Alex Powers (Brewster, Mass.) earned the save by tossing a scoreless ninth.
SNHU took a 2-0 lead in the first as Brendan O'Brien (East Bridgewater, Mass.) led off the game by leading off an error, then Pezzuto belted his home run to right. In the fifth, a Pezzuto double scored Anthony Aceto (North Providence, R.I.), while the Penmen took a 4-0 lead in the sixth when Stanton's single plated Matt Boulter (Wrentham, Mass.).
In the nightcap, SNHU scored twice in the first and once in the second to build a 3-0 lead before the Golden Knights tied the game with a run in the sixth and two in the seventh. The Penmen scored single runs in the eighth and ninth to go on top 5-3 before Saint Rose got the tying run into scoring position in the bottom of the ninth before falling.
In the eighth, Jon Minucci (Madison, Conn.) hit a solo home run to left to break the 3-3 deadlock, while in the ninth a Pezzuto single plated Tyler Fortanascio (Oradell, N.J.). In the bottom of the ninth Saint Rose had Kyle Charron and Joseph Carcone in scoring position with one out in the frame. A Scott Hladik sacrifice fly plated Carcone before Powers got AJ Capone to strike out to end the game.
Boulter hit a two-run home run in the first to stake the Penmen to an early lead, while SNHU made it 3-0 in the second when Riley Palmer (Goffstown, N.H.) doubled to lead off the frame and scored when Fortanascio reached on an error on his sac bunt attempt.
David Gibson (Hanover, Mass.) earned the win in relief in a third of an inning in the seventh as he registered a pickoff and also faced one batter in the eighth. Powers struck out four in his 1.2 innings of relief for his second save of the day, while SNHU starter Derrick Sylvester (Franklin, N.H.) went 6.1 innings and allowed eight hits and three runs (one earned) while fanning seven.
