Box Score RINDGE, N.H. – Junior Mendez (Patchogue, N.Y.) upped his record to 6-1 with eight strong innings as Southern New Hampshire University topped No. 19 Franklin Pierce University 4-1 in Northeast-10 baseball Wednesday afternoon at Pappas Field. The Penmen improve to 21-10 overall and 4-3 in the NE-10 Northeast Division, while the Ravens saw a 12-game win streak snapped and are now 22-10 and 5-1 in the division.
After Franklin Pierce staked itself to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, Southern New Hampshire grabbed three runs in the top of the fifth. A Brendan O'Brien (East Bridgewater, Mass.) single up the middle scored Andy Lalli (Lakeville, Mass.), while Matt Boulter (Wrentham, Mass.) drove in two when his single plated O'Brien and Jamie Wollerman (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.).
SNHU's other run came in the ninth when Jon Minucci (Madison, Conn.) worked a leadoff walk then scored on an error after Lalli singled to left.
The lone Franklin Pierce run came when Zach Mathieu singled to score Dan Kemp in the first.
Mendez scattered seven hits in his eight innings, allowing one run and striking out five with one walk. Alex Powers (Brewster, Mass.) posted his fifth save by retiring the side on nine pitches in the bottom of the ninth. Lalli led SNHU with a pair of hits.
Trevor Graham suffered his first loss of the season on the mound for FPU, allowing seven hits while fanning eight with no walks. Kemp, Mathieu and Matthew O'Herron had two hits apiece for the Ravens.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Thursday afternoon when it hosts Saint Anselm College in the rubber game of their three-game season series. First pitch is slated for 3:30 pm at Penmen Field.
