Baseball Completes Sweep of Merrimack With 4-2 Triumph

Box Score

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Southern New Hampshire University completed a three-game series sweep of Merrimack College with a 4-2 Northeast-10 Northeast Division baseball win Sunday afternoon at Penmen Field.  The win, coupled with Franklin Pierce's 5-1 setback to Bentley Sunday, moves the Penmen to the top of the Northeast Division standings at 25-10 overall and 8-3 in divisional play.  Merrimack falls to 18-12 and 4-4 in the division.

Michael Mastroberti (Ramsey, N.J.) led the Penmen offensively by going 2-3 with three RBI, while Tyler Fortanascio (Oradell, N.J.) and Andy Lalli (Lakeville, Mass.) each had a pair of hits.

Jon Massad (Shrewsbury, Mass.), making his first start on the mound since March 30, worked the first 8.2 innings and allowed three hits and a pair of unearned runs in the ninth while striking out six.  He did not allow a hit until Pat Florence singled through the right side to lead off the sixth inning.  Alex Powers (Brewster, Mass.) notched his seventh save of the season and second of the weekend.

Mastroberti drove in each of SNHU's first three runs.  In the second, after Lalli led off with a double and moved to third on a groundout, Mastroberti singled over the drawn-in infield to get the Penmen on the board.  In the fourth, Fortanascio and Lalli led off with back-to-back singles, with the pair both moving into scoring position on a sac bunt by Jamie Wollerman (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.).  Mastroberti lifted a sac fly to center to plate Fortanascio.

The Penmen tacked on two runs in the sixth to make it 4-0.  Fortanascio singled and Lalli was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and after another Wollerman sacrifice, Mastroberti singled through the left side to score Fortanascio.  Brendan O'Brien (East Bridgewater, Mass.) made it 4-0 when his groundout brought in Lalli.

Merrimack got the tying run into scoring position in the top of the ninth.  The Warriors had the bases loaded with two outs when Frank Crinella singled to right to bring in Mark O'Flynn.  Powers relieved Massad, and it became a 4-2 ballgame when a wild pitch allowed Casey Cotter to score and moved the other two runners into scoring position.  Powers induced a groundout by Eddie Newton to end the game.

Joe Carnevale took the loss on the mound for Merrimack, allowing eight hits and four runs while fanning three in seven innings.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Saint Michael's College for a 3:30 Northeast-10 conference contest.
