Box Score COLCHESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael's broke open a 3-2 game with five runs in the sixth inning en route to an 8-2 Northeast-10 baseball victory over Southern New Hampshire University Wednesday afternoon at Doc Jacobs Field. The Purple Knights improve to 10-19 and 3-8 in the NE-10's Northeast Division, while the Penmen are now 25-11 and 8-4 in divisional play.
Southern New Hampshire's Brendan O'Brien (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and Jon Minucci (Madison, Conn.) each had a pair of hits, while Riley Palmer (Goffstown, N.H.) had an RBI single in the first as the guests jumped out to a 2-0 lead. SNHU's other run came on a double steal attempt, as Minucci attempted to steal second, but got caught in a rundown. He got caught up long enough to allow Palmer to score from third.
After plating a run in the second and scoring twice in the third to take the lead, Saint Michael's used four hits, three walks and a Penmen error to score five times. Matt Feeney worked a bases-loaded walk, while Don McGuirl and Jacob Begnoche each had two-run singles.
Nick Myers upped his record to 4-1 by going 6.1 innings for the hosts, working around seven hits and five walks to allow just the two runs. Junior Mendez (Patchogue, N.Y.) took the loss for Southern New Hampshire, allowing eight hits and six runs (five earned) and striking out five but walking four. John Pickowicz (Hill, N.H.) allowed the other two runs in relief in the sixth, while David Gibson (Hanover, Mass.), Joe McCarthy (Nashua, N.H.) and Jon Massad (Shrewsbury, Mass.) held the Purple Knights hitless the final 2.1 innings.
Southern New Hampshire opens a three-game weekend series at home with Bentley University on Friday at Penmen Field. First pitch is slated for 3:30 pm.
