MANCHESTER, N.H. – The No. 1 Southern New Hampshire women's tennis team was defeated by a score of 5-2 to No. 2 Stonehill College in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship Saturday afternoon on the SNHU Tennis Courts. The loss marks the team's first loss in conference play on the season for the Penmen who are now 16-8 overall, while Stonehill is now 20-3.
The Penmen, who just recently captured their fourth consecutive regular season title, played in the program's fourth consecutive NE-10 championship. Despite the loss, Southern New Hampshire, ranked No. 6 in the East Region, is expected to earn an NCAA bid for its fifth straight year.
Down 3-0 after doubles play, SNHU tried for a comeback after winning two singles matches, but could not overcome the deficit.
Alena Mukdaprakorn (Hartford, Conn.) and Diana Vamvakitis (Wading River, N.Y.) were defeated by NE-10 Championship Most Valuable Player Paige Frost and Kirsti Toegemann by a score of 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. Southern New Hampshire had its best shot for a point in doubles play as Jamie Hann (Westhampton, N.Y.) and Kirsten Jean (Bedford, N.H.) took Analise Kump and Bailey Paradiso into an extra set, but ended up falling by a score of 9-7 at No. 3.
Vamvakitis earned the first Penmen point on the day at No. 2 singles while defeating Toegemann by a score of 6-4, 6-0. However, the Skyhawks took a 4-1 lead after Jean fell to Frost at No. 4 by a score of 6-2, 6-2. Mukdaprakorn fought for the second point in singles play while defeating Paradiso by scores of 6-4, 6-1, but Meryl Lawrence was too much for Amanda Albuquerque (Tewksbury, Mass.) as she defeated her in a battle at third singles by a score of 6-3, 6-4 to secure the win for Stonehill.
Mukdaprakorn and Vamvakitis were named to the Northeast-10 All-Championship team along with Stonehill's Kaitlyn Martin, Lawrence, and Frost.
The women's tennis NCAA selection show is set for April 23 at 8:00 p.m., where the Penmen will find out when they will play next.
