Box Score LOWELL, Mass. – UMass Lowell used a three-run first inning to upend Southern New Hampshire University 4-3 in Northeast-10 baseball Sunday afternoon at LeLacheur Park. The River Hawks, who were swept by the Penmen in the first two games of the series Saturday, improve to 27-18 overall and 8-9 in the NE-10 Northeast Division, while SNHU, which saw a six-game win streak snapped, is now 31-14 and 12-7 in the division.
The River Hawks rapped out four hits in the first inning to score three times, including a two-run single by Matt Sanchez. UML's other run came in the bottom of the sixth when an infield single by James Katsiroubas plated Kelly Rooney.
Southern New Hampshire made it a 3-1 game in the fourth when a sac fly by Riley Palmer (Goffstown, N.H.) scored Andrew Pezzuto (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.), who led off the frame with a single. In the sixth, the Penmen pulled within one when a Bryan Toland (Wildwood, N.J.) double brought home Matt Boulter (Wrentham, Mass.).
Trailing 4-2 entering the top of the ninth, SNHU had two runners on with one out as Al Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) was hit by a pitch and Palmer reached on an error, moving pinch runner Kyle McGinnity (Northborough, Mass.) to third. Boulter reached on a fielders' choice that saw Palmer out at second, but McGinnity scored to make it 4-3. Boulter reached scoring position by stealing second, but a Penmen groundout ended the game.
Katsiroubas and Jimmy Ricoy each had a pair of hits for UML, while Pezzuto led Southern New Hampshire with a 3-5 day at the plate. Toland also had a pair of hits.
Shane Beauchemin upped his record to 8-0 on the season by allowing seven hits and two runs in eight innings while fanning seven. Tyler Toyfair picked up his fifth save of the season for the River Hawks. Tyler Gauthier (Lynn, Mass.) took the loss for SNHU despite allowing just two hits after the first inning. In 5.1 innings, Gauthier allowed six hits and four runs while notching three strikeouts. David Gibson (Hanover, Mass.) faced a batter in the sixth before John Pickowicz (Hill, N.H.) tossed 2.2 scoreless innings to close out the game.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Tuesday night when it hosts Saint Michael's College in a 7:00 Northeast-10 contest at Penmen Field.
