Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. – Marty Dunlap's two-out, two-run single highlighted a three-run eighth inning as Franklin Pierce University rallied past No. 19 Southern New Hampshire University for a 4-2 Northeast-10 baseball victory Saturday night at Penmen Field. The win, coupled with Bentley's 3-1 loss at UMass Lowell, gives the Ravens the NE-10 Northeast Division regular season title and improves them to 32-15 and 15-6 in divisional play, while the Penmen are now 32-15 and 13-8 in the division.
SNHU will be at second-seeded Bentley University in the first round of the Northeast-10 Championship on Tuesday. Game time will be announced.
Trailing 2-1 entering the eighth, Franklin Pierce loaded the bases with one out against Penmen reliever Alex Powers (Brewster, Mass.). Calvin Graves worked out a leadoff walk, while Dan Kemp singled up the middle. After a lineout by Zach Mathieu, Nick Lacroix loaded the bases when he reached on an error.
Powers struck out Matt Walsh and got ahead 1-2 on Dunlap before he lifted a soft popup to shallow right center that dropped between three SNHU fielders, allowing Graves and Kemp to score. A John Razzino single through the left side got Lacroix home.
A two-run home run by Jon Minucci (Madison, Conn.), his eighth of the year, gave the Penmen a 2-0 lead in the second after Andy Lalli (Lakeville, Mass.) led off with a single. The Ravens got a run back in the top of the fifth when Justin Brock scored on a double steal.
Franklin Pierce threatened in the top of the third when it loaded the bases, but Penmen starter Jon Massad (Shrewsbury, Mass.) got out of the jam by getting Lacroix to strike out on three pitches. SNHU's best chance to extend its lead came in the bottom of the fifth when Andrew Pezzuto (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) doubled with two away. Pezzuto proceeded to steal third and headed home when the throw got past third base, but Raven shortstop Kemp alertly tracked down the overthrow and was able to get Pezzuto at home.
Ryan Leach got the win on the mound for the Ravens, tossing 2.2 hitless innings while striking out five. FPU starter Steve Hathaway went the first five innings, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out two. Joe Flynn earned his fourth save of the season by working a hitless ninth.
Powers took the loss for SNHU, allowing three unearned runs in his two innings. Massad went the first seven innings, surrendering five hits and one run while notching six strikeouts.
Kemp and Razzino led Franklin Pierce with two hits apiece, while Lalli had two of Southern New Hampshire's six hits.
SNHU closes out the regular season Sunday afternoon when it hosts Felician College in a 3:00 non-conference doubleheader at Penmen Field.
