PHILADELPHIA – The Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team competed at the USTA/ITA East Regional this past weekend.
Two doubles pairings reached the quarterfinals of their respective brackets. In A doubles action, Diana Vamvakitis (Wading River, N.Y.) and Jamie Hann (Westhampton, N.Y.) reached the quarterfinal round, where they were stopped by Sara Burinato and Claudia Sanchaz Gonzalez of NYIT by an 8-1 count. After an 8-4 win in the opening round, the pair blanked Hayle Scanlan and Brianna Florita of Daemen College 8-0 in the round of 16.
In the B doubles draw, Yolanda Green (Springfield, Mass.) and Kirsten Jean (Bedford, N.H.) reached the quarterfinals, where they fell to Kara Hole and Chealsey Giatrelis of Merrimack College. The duo bested Hannah Glowacki and Jamie Wilkin of Post University 8-1 before defeating Gaby Adia and Taylor King of Adelphi University 8-3.
Vamvakitis reached the round of 16 in the A singles bracket. Seeded 11th and receiving a first-round bye, Vamvakitis rallied for a 4-6, 7-5, 10-8 win over Rocio Cabanillas Moreno of Goldey-Beacom College before falling to fifth-seeded Burinato of NYIT 6-2, 6-3.
The SNHU women's tennis team returns to dual match action Thursday afternoon at Assumption College. The next Penmen home match is slated for Sunday, September 29, when SNHU hosts Post in an 11:00 am match.
