Box Score 2 PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – No. 13 Southern New Hampshire University swept a Northeast-10 baseball doubleheader from Pace University by scores of 4-2 and 10-6 Saturday afternoon at Finnerty Field. The Penmen, who are ranked No. 13 in the most recent NCBWA Division II poll, improved to 13-4 and 2-0 in NE-10 play, while the Setters are now 3-7 and 0-2 in the league.
In the opener, Pace grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Chris Gili's single scored David Pepe, who worked a leadoff walk. The Penmen scored single runs in the third and fourth frame and tacked on a pair in the sixth to build a 4-1 advantage.
Greg Pezzuto (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) tied the game in the top of the third with his solo home run. In the fourth, Mike Mastroberti (Ramsey, N.J.) doubled to drive in Al Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.), while another Mastroberti double in the sixth made it 3-1, this one plating Riley Palmer (Goffstown, N.H.). Bryan Toland (Wildwood, N.J.) singled to drive in Mastroberti and make it 4-1.
Mastroberti, Pezzuto and Toland each had two hits in the opener. Derrick Sylvester (Franklin, N.H.) upped his record to 3-1 on the mound with eight innings, scattering seven hits while allowing two runs and striking out three. Benjamin Criscuolo (Branford, Conn.) struck out two in the ninth to nail down his third save of the season.
In the nightcap, Southern New Hampshire outslugged Pace 15-10 and built a 9-0 lead after five innings, scoring twice in the second, four times in the third and three times in the fifth. The Setters, trailing 10-1 entering the final frame, scored five times in the bottom of the ninth to account for the final.
Mastroberti, Toland, Palmer, Brendan O'Brien (East Bridgewater, Mass.), Matt Rabbito (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Anthony Aceto (North Providence, R.I.) each had two hits in the nightcap. Palmer homered to lead off the fifth inning and knocked in two runs, while Tyler Fortanascio (Oradell, N.J.) went 1-3 and drove in three runs.
Sophomore lefthander Tim Viehoff (Derry, N.H.) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before John Kukura and Chris Gili hit back-to-back two-out singles to get the Setters on the board. He fanned six in six innings while allowing two hits and one run to pick up his first win of the season.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Sunday when it travels to Adelphi University for a noon Northeast-10 doubleheader.
