Box Score 2 GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – No. 13 Southern New Hampshire University and Adelphi University split a pair of Northeast-10 extra-inning baseball games Sunday afternoon. The Penmen took down an 8-7, 10-inning slugfest in game one before the Panthers took a 2-1, 10-inning triumph in the nightcap. SNHU is now 14-5 and 3-1 in NE-10 play, while the Panthers are now 6-9 and 2-2 in the league.
In the opener, Brendan O'Brien (East Bridgewater, Mass.) scored the winning run with two outs in the top of the 10th. He singled and after stealing to second, scored on a single by Manny Cruz (Wolcott, Conn.).
Adelphi nearly won the game in the bottom of the ninth, as it had runners on first and second with one away, however, freshman reliever Benjamin Criscuolo (Branford, Conn.) came in and induced a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the inning. He tossed a 1-2-3 10th to pick up the win.
SNHU staked itself to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first, as the Penmen rapped out five hits and took advantage of a pair of Adelphi errors. The guests took a 6-5 lead, however, by playing three runs apiece in the first and second frames, and made it 7-5 in the bottom of the fourth.
The Penmen got a run back in the top of the fifth when a Tyler Fortanascio (Oradell, N.J.) single scored Riley Palmer (Goffstown, N.H.). Palmer also scored the tying run in the seventh when he came home on a Bryan Toland (Wildwood, N.J.) base hit.
O'Brien finished 3-6 at the plate with two stolen bases in the opener, while Palmer and Greg Pezzuto (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) each had two hits.
In the nightcap, Adelphi took advantage of a pair of Penmen errors in the bottom of the 10th as two runners got on via miscue with one away. A single by brought in the winning run.
Adelphi took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, with SNHU tying it in the sixth as a Mike Mastroberti (Ramsey, N.J.) single plated Palmer after he had singled and moved to second on an error.
Palmer and Mastroberti each had two hits in the nightcap. Mike Robert (Nashua, N.H.) was the hard-luck loser for the Penmen, going 9.2 innings and scattering seven hits while fanning seven.
