Box Score RINDGE, N.H. – No. 14 Southern New Hampshire University scored nine times in the bottom of the third inning en route to a 10-0 Northeast-10 baseball victory over Saint Michael's College at Pappas Field Thursday night. The Penmen improve to 16-5 overall and 4-1 in the NE-10, while the Purple Knights are now 1-6 and 0-1 in the league.
Brendan O'Brien (East Bridgewater, Mass.) went 3-3 at the plate, finishing a home run short of the cycle with a pair of runs batted in. Al Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) belted a two-run home run in the third and also had a first-inning sac fly that gave the Penmen a 1-0 lead. Riley Palmer (Goffstown, N.H.) and Anthony Aceto (North Providence, R.I.) each had two hits, with Aceto also knocking in a pair of runs. Palmer extended his hit streak to nine games.
Sophomore Joe McCarthy (Nashua, N.H.) (left) went seven shutout innings on the mound, improving to 2-0 as he allowed four hits while striking out seven. Zach Zona (Auburn, Mass.) and Lucas Olen (Bedford, N.H.) each threw an inning of scoreless relief.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the first, Southern New Hampshire sent 15 men to the plate in the third inning, scoring nine times on eight hits while also taking advantage of three walks and a hit batsman. Stanton's two-run blast to left-center made it 4-0, while Aceto also had a two-run single in the frame.
Michael Dougherty had two of Saint Michael's four hits on the evening, while starter Curt Echo took the loss, working 2.2 innings.
Southern New Hampshire is slated to return to action Friday afternoon when it travels to Bentley University for a 3:30 Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division game.
