Box Score LANTANA, Fla. – Bryan Toland (Wildwood, N.J.) went 3-4 with three RBI, while Cole Warren (Bedford, N.H.) struck out 11 over eight innings as Southern New Hampshire University closed out its Florida spring break swing with a 6-1 non-conference baseball victory over Southern Connecticut State University at the Santaluces Complex on Saturday night. The Penmen won their fifth in a row to improve to 9-3, while the Owls are now 1-2-1 on the season.
Toland helped stake SNHU to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third when his double plated Riley Palmer (Goffstown, N.H.), who led off by reaching on an error. He also delivered a two-run single in a three-run seventh that extended SNHU's lead to 5-0.
Brendan O'Brien (East Bridgewater, Mass.) finished 3-4 at the plate, in the process moving into sole possession of third place on SNHU's career hit list with 170. He also recorded a pair of stolen bases.
In the third, after Toland doubled, Michael Mastroberti (Ramsey, N.J.) followed with another double to plate Toland and make it 2-0. All of SNHU's activity in the seventh came with two outs, as Al Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) singled with two away. After Palmer was hit by a pitch, Tyler Fortanascio (Oradell, N.J.) singled to score Stanton, with Palmer and Fortanascio scoring on Toland's single.
After Southern Connecticut scored in the bottom of the seventh to make it 5-1, SNHU added a run in the eighth. Kyle McGinnity (Northboro, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and scored on a one-out single by Manny Cruz (Wolcott, Conn.).
Warren evened his record at 1-1 after he struck out 11 in eight innings of work with three walks while allowing three hits and the one run. John Pickowicz (Hill, N.H.) worked a hitless ninth to secure the victory.
Southern New Hampshire is back in action next weekend with five games in North Carolina, four of those coming in Cary at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary. The swing begins Friday with a 6:00 contest against Felician College.
