Manchester, N.H. – Junior Emily King (Florence, Mass.) scored with 4.2 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Southern New Hampshire women's lacrosse team over Saint Michael's by a score of 11 to 10 in a Northeast 10 conference matchup Thursday afternoon. The Penmen improve to 3-9 overall and 2-6 in league play, while the Purple Knights fall to 6-3 overall and 4-3 in the league.
Saint Michael's got off to a quick start, jumping to a 3-0 lead in the first six minutes with two goals by Claire Martin and one by Courtney Piper. The Penmen answered with five unanswered goals of their own through five different players. Freshman Ali Gosselin netted two for the Purple Knights to tie it up at five with 11:08 to play in the first half. Seniors Phoebe Clark (Concord, N.H.) and Ellie Morin (Scarborough, Maine) added their second goals of the game with 10:16 and 4:53 remaining in the first half to regain the lead at 7-5. Saint Michael's responded with two goals by Steph Bonewald and Kate Boyer to tie it up at seven going into halftime.
The Purple Knights struck first in the second half when Gosselin scored her third goal of the game. Martin also tallied a goal to go up two with 19:45 remaining. The Penmen came back to tie it with two goals of their own, one by Clark and the other coming from freshman Casey Duggan (Framingham, Mass.). Saint Michael's then took the lead again with 6:36 remaining in regulation through a free position goal by Kate Boyer. Freshman Ellen Decker (Foxborough, Mass.) then notched the game-tying goal with 5:12 to play, and the Penmen controlled play for most of the last five minutes. The final goal by King came on a counter-attack led by Clark who earned a free position just before the goal happened.
Maria Ploof (Middlebury, Vt.) had 13 saves for the Penmen, Grace Gunning saved 14 shots in a losing effort.
The Penmen return to action when they travel to Bridgeport for a non-conference game at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 12.
