The Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team extended its winning streak to 10 matches with an 8-1 victory over the College of Saint Rose on Saturday night. The win secured the No. 2 seed and a first round bye in the 2015 Northesast-10 Conference Women's Tennis Championship.
The Penmen swept through doubles action before claiming five of six singles matches. Senior Ashley Loft (Leysin, Switzerland) and freshman Kaitlyn Poje (East Stroudsburg, Pa.) took an 8-4 decision in No. 1 doubles, while sophomore Lindsay Baum (North Salem, N.Y.) and freshman Rachel Wagner (Framingham, Mass.) cruised to an 8-0 win at second doubles. In the third doubles flight, senior Yolanda Green (Springfield, Mass.) and freshman Lauren Makenchie (Hampton, N.H.) posted an 8-2 triumph.
Loft improved to 12-0 in singles action this fall after topping Averie Bowen at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-3. Baum and Wagner each earned 6-0, 6-0 wins at fourth and fifth singles, respectively, while Saint Rose secured its lone point of the match when Isabella Cubillos bested Green in the second singles 6-4, 7-5. At No. 3 singles, Poje picked up a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Paige Southwick.
In the final singles match of the evening, freshman Sophea Sindorf (Moultonborough, N.H.) battled back to claim a three-set victory over Maria Malafronte. After Malafronte took the first set 6-4, Sindorf forced a decisive third set with a 6-2 win in the second. In a seesaw third set, Sindorf emerged victorious with a 7-6 (11-9) final.
Notes:
- For the second consecutive season, Southern New Hampshire enters the NE-10 tournament on a 10-match winning streak and as the No. 2 seed.
- Baum, Poje and Wagner extend their own personal winning streaks to nine matches each.
- Poje saw her four-match streak of 6-0, 6-0 victories come to an end with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles.
What's Next:
SNHU will host the winner of No. 3 seed Stonehill College and sixth-seeded Le Moyne College in the Northeast-10 tournament semifinals on Friday, Oct. 23 at 2 p.m.
