Box Score MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – No. 18 Southern New Hampshire University wrapped up its Myrtle Beach trip 5-0 with a 7-1 baseball victory over the University of Bridgeport Sunday morning at the Ripken Experience. The Penmen, who have won five straight, improve to 5-3, while the Purple Knights are now 0-4 on the season.
Sunday was highlighted by the return of senior David Gibson (Hanover, Mass.) to the mound after missing virtually all last season. In five innings, Gibson allowed two hits and struck out five without issuing a walk. Rob Del Signore (Londonderry, N.H.) and Jake Walkinshaw (Seymour, Conn.) each worked two innings of relief, with Walkinshaw recording a save.
At the plate, Derek Bauer (Millis, Mass.) went 3-3 with an RBI, while Carson Helms (Farmington, Conn.) went 2-2 including a two-run double in a five-run ninth. Alejandro Diaz (Old Bridge, N.J.) also led off the ninth with a home run.
SNHU staked itself to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Bauer singled to plate Bryan Toland (Wildwood, N.J.), while Bauer later scored on a throw after Helms singled. Bridgeport grabbed a run in the bottom of the sixth before the Penmen exploded in the top of the ninth.
Southern New Hampshire is back in action Friday when it faces defending East Region champion Saint Thomas Aquinas College at the Dinwiddie Challenge in Sutherland, Virginia at 6:00 pm, the first of four games at the Challenge.
