Box Score 2 LANTANA, Fla. – No. 23 Southern New Hampshire University split a pair of non-conference baseball contests on Wednesday, falling to Lynn University 7-3 in the afternoon before blanking Post University 6-0 in the nightcap. The Penmen are now 6-4 on the season.
Against Post, the Penmen surrendered just three hits. Starting pitcher Alex Person (Foxboro, Mass.) retired the first 15 batters he faced before giving up a single to open the sixth. Person worked seven innings and allowed two hits while striking out 11 and not issuing a walk. Jake Walkinshaw (Seymour, Conn.) and Kyle Thomas (Lowell, Mass.) each worked an inning of relief.
SNHU grabbed three runs in the top of the second, with two coming on a single by Zach Goldstein (Merrick, N.Y.). Earlier, Derek Bauer (Millis, Mass.) had worked a bases-loaded walk to bring in Lorenzo Papa (Stoneham, Mass.). The Penmen tacked on a run in the eighth when Mike Montville (Portsmouth, N.H.) tripled to lead off the frame and scored on a passed ball.
Carson Helms (Farmington, Conn.) made it 5-0 in the top of the ninth with an RBI single that plated pinch runner Jeremy Tejada (Bronx, N.Y.). The final Penmen run scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch that scored Goldstein.
Goldstein and Helms finished with two hits apiece in the nightcap as the Penmen outhit the Eagles 8-3.
Against the Fighting Knights, SNHU staked itself to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. A Helms double to right-center brought in Goldstein, while Papa's single to center brought in Helms. The lead would be short-lived, as Lynn scored twice in the bottom half of the first, then scored twice in the third and once in the fourth to make it 5-2.
Southern New Hampshire cut the lead to 5-3 in the top of the eighth as a sac fly by Alejandro Diaz (Old Bridge, N.J.) brought in Montville, but the hosts responded the next half inning with a two-run home run by Thomas Kain.
Bauer led the Penmen with three hits, while Goldstein, Helms, Montville and Diaz each recorded two hits as the Penmen outhit Lynn 13-11. Stephen Fortuna (Metuchen, N.J.) took the loss on the mound for SNHU, allowing five hits and three runs (two earned) in three innings of relief. Starter Joe McCarthy (Nashua, N.H.) lasted just a third of an inning.
