Box Score 2 MANCHESTER, N.H. – David Gibson (Hanover, Mass.) tossed a shutout in the opener as No. 24 Southern New Hampshire University swept Saint Michael's College in a Northeast-10 baseball doubleheader Tuesday at Penmen Field by scores of 5-0 and 4-3. The Penmen improve to 20-7 and 6-2 in the NE-10, extending their win streak to six games, while the Purple Knights are now 6-17 and 2-10 in the league.
In the opener, Gibson upped his record to 4-1 by allowing just three hits and striking out six while walking two. He carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning, where Don McGuirl led off the inning with a single up the middle.
The Penmen jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. A Mike Montville (Portsmouth, N.H.) single scored Zach Goldstein (Merrick, N.Y.), while Alejandro Diaz (Old Bridge, N.J.) and Montville scored when Derek Bauer (Millis, Mass.) reached on an error. Montville led off the third with a home run, his third of the season, while in the eighth, Bauer led off with a walk and scored on a sac fly by Goldstein.
Montville and Ryan Gendron (Nashua, N.H.) each had two hits in the opener as the Penmen outhit the Purple Knights 8-3.
In the nightcap, the Penmen loaded the bases with one out and took a 1-0 lead when Diaz grounded out to score Goldstein, but Saint Michael's escaped further damage with Bauer flying out. The Purple Knights scored three times in the top of the second to take a 3-1 lead, but SNHU grabbed a run back in the third when Diaz scored after Bauer reached on an error.
Goldstein homered to lead off the seventh to tie the game 3-3, while a double steal by Montville and Carson Helms (Farmington, Conn.) allowed the eventual winning run to score by Helms with two down in the frame. The guests got the tying run to third in the top of the ninth, but a strikeout ended the threat.
Alex Person (Foxboro, Mass.) improved to 5-0 out of the bullpen, tossing four shutout innings and allowing two hits while fanning four. Penmen starter Rob Del Signore (Londonderry, N.H.) allowed three hits and three runs (none earned) in five innings while recording four strikeouts and three walks.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Thursday when it hosts Saint Anselm College in a 6:00 Northeast-10 contest at Penmen Field.
