No. 24 Baseball Dispatches Saint Anselm Early

Box Score

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Two first-inning home runs and five no-hit innings from senior Cole Warren (Bedford, N.H.) paved the way for No. 24 Southern New Hampshire University to post a 14-3 Northeast-10 baseball victory over Saint Anselm College Thursday night at Penmen Field.  The Penmen, who have won seven straight, are 21-7 and 7-2 in the NE-10 Northeast Division, while the Hawks are now 10-17 and 4-7 in division play.

Warren, who upped his record to 2-1 in his eighth start of the season, did not allow a hit over five innings and struck out 11 while walking five.  He struck out seven straight Hawks and fanned the side in the second, third and fourth innings.

Zach Goldstein (Merrick, N.Y.) gave SNHU a 1-0 lead when he led off the bottom of the first with a home run.  Three batters later, Mike Montville (Portsmouth, N.H.) delivered a two-run blast to center field to make it 3-0.  The Penmen tacked on five runs in the third to build an 8-0 lead, with the highlight of the frame a three-run home run by Tyler Fortanascio (Oradell, N.J.).

SNHU added two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth.

Goldstein and Carson Helms (Farmington, Conn.) each had three hits as the Penmen outhit the Hawks 17-3, with 10 SNHU players registering one hit.  Fortanascio led SNHU with three RBI, while Montville, Goldstein and Derek Bauer (Millis, Mass.) each knocking in a pair of runs.  Bauer delivered a two-run double in the seventh.

Mike Hayden broke up SNHU's no-hit bid in the sixth when he led off with a single off Penmen reliever Ian Searles (Wareham, Mass.).   The Hawks scored twice in the seventh and added a run in the eighth.

Southern New Hampshire used three relievers, combining to allow three hits and three runs (one earned) while fanning four.

With the win, SNHU clinches the three-game series season against Saint Anselm and claims two points in the Queen City Cup, the year-long all-sport competition between the two Manchester schools.  The Penmen lead the Hawks 18-10 in the competition.

SNHU returns to action Saturday when it travels to Assumption College for a noon doubleheader.
