Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. – A home run by Jay Jabs to lead off the eighth inning proved to be the difference as No. 1/3 Franklin Pierce University edged No. 20 Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 baseball Wednesday evening at Penmen Field. The Ravens extended their best-in-the-nation win streak to 16 games as they are now 35-2 and 13-1 in the NE-10, while the Penmen saw their 11-game win streak snapped and are now 25-8 and 11-3 in the league.
Jabs, who leads the NE-10 in home runs, belted one to just right of straightaway center to open the eighth and give Franklin Pierce a 4-3 lead it would not relinquish. It was Jabs' 11th round-tripper of the season.
Franklin Pierce staked itself to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as John Razzino singled with two outs and no one on and after stealing second, scored on a Matt Walsh single. The lead was short-lived, as Carson Helms (Farmington, Conn.) hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the frame that scored Zach Goldstein (Merrick, N.Y.).
The guests scored twice in the top of the third to take a 3-2 lead. Maxx Sheehan led off with a single, followed by a Jabs walk. On a double steal, the ball was overthrown to third base, allowing Sheehan to score and Jabs to move to third. Jabs scored on a groundout by Walsh. The Penmen tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when a Goldstein single scored Ryan Gendron (Nashua, N.H.).
Raven starter Mike Lundin improved to 7-0, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out six in his complete game effort. Jake Walkinshaw (Seymour, Conn.) took the loss for SNHU, coming in in relief in the seventh of starter Cole Warren (Bedford, N.H.) and allowing the Jabs home run in the eighth. Warren went 6.1 innings and allowed three hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out eight and walking three.
Goldstein had three of SNHU's six hits, while Mike Montville (Portsmouth, N.H.) saw his hit streak stopped at 11 games as he went 0-3 with a walk.
Southern New Hampshire travels to Saint Michael's for a 3:30 contest on Thursday.
