No. 24 Softball Closes Out Regular Season With Sweep of Bentley

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior Mo Hannan (Scarborough, Maine) collected four hits and classmate Katie Caruso (Newton, Mass.) drove in five runs, as No. 24 Southern New Hampshire University swept Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference softball play on Saturday, 3-0 and 5-1. The Penmen improve to 29-6 and 18-3 in the league, while the Falcons now stand 11-18 and 8-12 within the confines of the NE-10.

Southern New Hampshire has now won eight-straight games, and with their 5-1 victory in game two, the Penmen set a new program record for regular season wins. SNHU had won 28 games in each of the past two regular seasons, and set a school record for total wins a season ago with 31.

Sophomore Nicole Gubellini (Salem, N.H.) scattered five hits and struck out seven in the lid lifter to improve to 9-3 with her third complete game shutout of the season. Gubellini has now allowed one earned run or fewer in four consecutive starts, and her earned run average is just 1.49 in 75 innings of work.

Both Gubellini and Bentley starter Kelly Ferris traded shutout innings until the sixth, when Southern New Hampshire was able to break through for all three of its runs. Hannan led off the inning with a triple to right center before Caruso singled two batters later to plate the game's first run. After Ferris picked up a strikeout to make it one on with two away, freshman Sarah Lavallee (Candia, N.H.) stepped in and launched a two-run shot to left for her team-leading seventh long ball of the season give the visitors a 3-0 cushion.

Gubellini responded in the bottom half of the frame with a 1-2-3 inning before working around a leadoff single in the seventh to secure the victory. The righthander was able to work out of trouble all afternoon, as she stranded runners on second base in each of the first four frames to give her offense the chance to get on the board. She retired the final batter of the first three innings on strikes, and registered at least one punch out in five of the game's seven innings.

In game two, Lavallee took to the circle and turned in a complete game performance to pick up the first win of her career. The freshman righthander surrendered one run while striking out two and allowing six hits.

In similar fashion to game one, the Penmen provided their starting pitcher with all the offense she would need in one inning. In the third, senior Ali Maloof (Norwood, Mass.) drew a bases loaded walk to make it 1-0, and Caruso followed with a bases clearing triple that increased the Southern New Hampshire lead to four. After junior Lindsey Bolduc (Londonderry, N.H.) and Lavallee drew back-to-back walks to reload the bases, sophomore Erin Morrissey (Commack, N.Y.) drove in Caruso with a sacrifice fly to push the Penmen in front, 5-0.

Lavallee held the Falcons in check until the seventh, as she gave up just one hit over the next four innings. In the final frame, Jill Raia drove in the lone Bentley run of the doubleheader with an RBI double and provide the 5-1 final.

Hannan led the way offensively for Southern New Hampshire with a 4-for-7 performance in the twinbill that included a pair of runs scored. Maloof scored twice and added three hits in six trips to the plate to extend her hitting streak to 21 games, while Caruso chipped in with three hits and four RBI.

The Penmen will remain idle until Friday when they take on the second round winner in the 2015 Northeast-10 Softball Tournament in one of the championship's semifinals at Penmen Field at a time to be determined.
