Women's Lacrosse Rallies in Final Minutes, Downs Owls

Box Score

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Alexa Allen's (East Longmeadow, Mass.) goal with 1:41 broke an 11-11 tie as Southern New Hampshire University rallied for a 13-11 Northeast-10 women's lacrosse victory at Southern Connecticut State University Saturday afternoon.  The Penmen won their second straight to close out the regular season 8-7 and 6-7 in the NE-10, while the Owls are now 3-14 and 1-12 in the league.

With the win, the Penmen finish in a three-way tie for seventh place in the conference standings with Assumption College and Saint Michael's College, however, due to conference tiebreak procedures, SNHU is on the outside looking in for the eight-team Northeast-10 Championship that opens Wednesday.

Allen finished with two goals and two assists.  Lindsay Bucknam (Bow, N.H.) recorded four goals and an assist, while Emily King (Florence, Mass.) added three goals and an assist.  Kennedy Daziel (East Hampstead, N.H.) scored twice, while Alexa Bedell (Londonderry, N.H.) and Casey Duggan (Framingham, Mass.) each added single goals.

Southern Connecticut was led by Sarah Muise with four goals, while Taylor Portelinha and Jennifer McCarthy each scored twice.

The Owls, who had trailed 8-5 seven minutes into the second half, used a 6-1 run to build an 11-9 lead with 11:28 remaining on a Muise tally.  Bucknam got the comeback started when she scored at the 8:16 mark, then a Daziel goal with 2:38 left tied the game 11-11.

Daziel won the ensuing draw and Allen's goal with 1:41 left put the Penmen on top 12-11, with Bucknam assisting on the tally.  Bedell controlled the draw for the guests, and Bucknam added an insurance tally with 29 seconds left that made it 13-11.  SNHU won its fourth straight draw to close out the game and seal the win.

Southern New Hampshire trailed 5-4 at halftime, but scored the first four goals of the second half, and Bedell's goal with 22:58 remaining gave the Penmen an 8-5 lead.  SNHU had trailed the entire first half, surrendering the game's first three goals and playing catch up the remainder of the first frame.

Nicole Kennedy (Windham, Maine) made six saves for Southern New Hampshire, while SCSU counterpart Nora Anderson recorded 12 stops.  The Owls outshot the Penmen 32-29.
