MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Southern New Hampshire University baseball team fell 9-1 to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, the Double-A Eastern League affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, in a seven-inning exhibition contest Tuesday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
Southern New Hampshire plated its only run in the top of the fourth inning. Zach Goldstein (Merrick, N.Y.) greeted Fisher Cat reliever Greg Burke with a single to left. After stealing second, Goldstein scored on a triple to the gap in left-center by Mike Montville (Portsmouth, N.H.) that made it 4-1.
New Hampshire scored single runs in the first and second innings before making it 4-0 in the third on a K.C. Hobson home run. A three-run blast by Shane Opitz in the fourth made it 7-1, and the Fisher Cats added two more runs in the fifth to account for the 9-1 final.
Derek Bauer (Millis, Mass.) had the other Penmen hit, singling in the top of the seventh inning with two away. The Fisher Cats outhit Southern New Hampshire 6-3, but benefitted from seven walks from Penmen pitching.
Lefthander John Anderson tossed three perfect innings to get the win, striking out four. Southern New Hampshire starter Joe McCarthy (Nashua, N.H.) took the loss, allowing three hits and four runs (three earned) while fanning three and walking four in three innings of work. Both teams used five pitchers in the contest.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Wednesday afternoon when it hosts fourth-ranked Franklin Pierce University in a 3:30 contest at Penmen Field.
