Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. – No. 4 Franklin Pierce University scored five times in the first four innings and recorded a 5-0 victory over Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 baseball Wednesday afternoon in a game shorted to six innings by snow. The Ravens improved to 28-2 and 8-1 in the NE-10 with the victory, while the Penmen are now 14-7 and 2-2 in the league.
Franklin Pierce staked itself to a 1-0 lead in the second when a Kyle Hood groundout scored Matt O'Herron after runners at first and second moved up on a passed ball. In the third the Ravens tacked on two unearned runs when John Razzino and Matt Walsh drove in runs back-to-back. Razzino grounded out while Walsh singled up the middle.
Chris LaVorgna made it 4-0 in the fourth when he scored from third on a dropped third strike on a strikeout. A John Friday groundout plated Hood to close out the scoring. FPU added a run in the top of the seventh, but the game was called at the end of the half-inning, with the score reverting back to 5-0.
SNHU's best chance to get on the board came in the sixth as Zach Goldstein (Merrick, N.Y.) and Manny Cruz (Wolcott, N.H.) led off with back-to-back singles, however, three straight outs ended the threat.
Walsh and LaVorgna had two hits apiece as the Ravens outhit the Penmen 5-3. Franklin Pierce starter Mike Lundin went six innings, allowing three hits while striking out five and walking two. SNHU counterpart David Gibson (Hanover, Mass.) took the loss, allowing five runs (two earned) in 5.2 innings while striking out five and walking two. Rob Del Signore (Londonderry, N.H.) recorded the final out of the sixth via strikeout.
Southern New Hampshire is slated to return to action Thursday at 3:30 when it hosts the University of Bridgeport in a non-league contest.
