Box Score RINDGE, N.H. – Not leading until 1:11 left in regulation, the Southern New Hampshire University women's lacrosse team needed overtime, but defeated Franklin Pierce University 16-13 in Northeast-10 action Wednesday afternoon at Sodexo Field. The Penmen, who won their third straight and for the fourth time in five games, evened its record at 5-5 while moving to 3-5 in the NE-10. The Ravens are also 5-5 and 3-5 in the league.
SNHU trailed 6-3 at halftime and 8-3 just over a minute into the second half. Down 10-6 5:29 into the second half, the Penmen scored four straight goals and an Alexa Allen (East Longmeadow, Mass.) goal with 14:10 left tied the game 10-10. Caitlin Sweeney gave the Ravens an 11-10 lead with 7:47 left, but SNHU's Courtney Nivala (Westminster, Mass.) responded 1:29 later.
Franklin Pierce took a 12-11 lead with just over five minutes to go, but Kennedy Daziel (East Hampstead, N.H.) tied the game with 4:11 left and Casey Duggan (Framingham, Mass.) scored with 1:11 to go to give the Penmen their first lead on the afternoon, 13-12. The lead was short-lived, as Nicole Dale forced overtime with 52 ticks on the clock.
The overtime was all Southern New Hampshire, with the guests scoring all three goals and generating a 6-2 shot advantage. Lindsay Bucknam (Bow, N.H.) scored 29 seconds into the extra frame, while Emily King (Florence, Mass.) scored with 3:44 left. Bucknam added a man-up goal with 12 seconds left to account for the final score.
FPU scored the game's first two goals and jumped out to a 6-2 lead with just under nine minutes left. King converted a free position shot with 3:38 left to make it 6-3, which ended up the halftime score.
King and Bucknam led SNHU with four goals apiece, while Ellen Decker (Foxboro, Mass.) added three goals and an assist. Duggan scored twice, while Nivala finished with a goal and four assists. Nicole Kennedy (Windham, Maine) finished with 15 saves for the Penmen.
Brianna Sweeney led Franklin Pierce with four goals, while Caitlin Sweeney added three goals and three assists. Dale also scored three times, while Denise Hunt made 10 saves. The hosts outshot SNHU 40-29, but played a man down much of the game as the Ravens were assessed nine yellow cards and the Penmen just two.
Southern New Hampshire returns home Saturday when it hosts top-ranked Adelphi University in a 1:00 Northeast-10 contest.
