Box Score 2 EASTON, Mass. – Stonehill College swept a baseball doubleheader from No. 18 Southern New Hampshire University Saturday at Lou Gorman Field. The Skyhawks took a 4-1 win in a Northeast-10 Conference game in the opener, and posted a 6-5 non-league victory in the nightcap. Stonehill wraps up the regular season 30-11-1 and 15-6 in the NE-10 Northeast Division, while the Penmen are 30-11 and 16-5 in the division.
The same two teams will meet Tuesday evening at 6:00 pm in a Northeast-10 Championship first round game at SNHU's Penmen Field. The Penmen are the No. 2 seed in the Northeast Division, while Stonehill is the No. 3 seed.
Stonehill grabbed single runs in the third, fifth, sixth and eighth innings en route to the victory in the opener. SNHU's lone run came in the top of the sixth when an Alejandro Diaz (Old Bridge, N.J.) single plated Zach Goldstein (Merrick, N.Y.).
Diaz had two of SNHU's five hits in game one. David Gibson (Hanover, Mass.) took the loss for Southern New Hampshire, scattering nine hits and allowing three runs (two earned) in seven innings, striking out two and walking two.
In the nightcap, Southern New Hampshire took a 5-4 lead when it grabbed a pair of runs in the top of the eighth. Cam Oliveira (Tewksbury, Mass.) reached on an error to lead off the frame, and scored when Goldstein reached on a fielder's choice. Goldstein scored SNHU's fifth run on a single by Manny Cruz (Wolcott, Conn.). Stonehill retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, then had a 1-2-3 ninth to complete the sweep.
Goldstein, Cruz and Tyler Fortanascio (Oradell, N.J.) each had two hits in the nightcap, while Diaz doubled in the seventh to extend his hit streak to 14 games. Justin Valdespina (Garfield, N.J.) took the loss in relief for the Penmen, with starter Tim Viehoff (Derry, N.H.) striking out eight in five innings, but allowing four hits and three runs, all unearned. The two teams combined for seven errors in the nightcap, with Stonehill committing five miscues.
