BACK-TO-BACK: Softball Captures Second Straight Northeast-10 Championship

Box Score

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Junior Lindsey Bolduc (Londonderry, N.H.) finished 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, and senior Ali Maloof (Norwood, Mass.) hurled a complete shutout as No. 23 Southern New Hampshire University claimed its second consecutive Northeast-10 Conference Softball Championship with a 6-0 victory over Adelphi University at Penmen Field on Saturday. The Penmen, the top seed in the Northeast Division, improve to 31-6 with their 10th straight win, while the Panthers, the No. 1 seed in the Southwest Division, fall to 25-19.

Southern New Hampshire earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship with Saturday's victory and will now await Monday morning's selection show (10 a.m.) to discover who its next opponent will be. The Penmen also tied the program record for wins in a single season with their 31st triumph in the tournament title game.

Maloof scattered eight hits and struck out three in her 20th complete game of the season to improve to 20-1 in the circle. She also finished 2-for-4 at the plate and has now hit safely in 23 straight games.

After Maloof stranded five Adelphi baserunners through the first three innings, Southern New Hampshire jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Junior Katie Caruso (Newton, Mass.) led off with an infield single before Bolduc stepped in next and connected on a two-run shot to left to put the Penmen ahead by a pair.

Southern New Hampshire made it a 4-0 game in the sixth when freshman Sarah Lavallee (Candia, N.H.) launched her eighth home run of the season. Caruso started the inning with a base hit to left before Lavallee drilled a 1-0 pitch over the wall in right center to double the Penmen advantage.

In the seventh, SNHU plated two more runs to put the game out of reach. Freshman Brittany Perdigao (Stoughton, Mass.) reached on a one-out error before the Panthers misplayed a bunt attempt off the bat junior Mo Hannan (Scarborough, Maine) to put runners on first and second. After a bunt single by Maloof, Caruso drove in the fifth run of the game with an RBI groundout. Bolduc followed with an infield single that scored Hannan and provided the final margin of victory.

Caruso finished with two hits in four trips to the plate and was named the Northeast-10 Tournament's Most Valuable Player after batting .500 (4-for-8) with four RBI and four runs scored in Southern New Hampshire's two games. She was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Bolduc, who finished 5-for-8 with a home run and four RBI, and Maloof, who picked up two wins in the circle and delivered four hits at the plate.
