MANCHESTER, N.H. – A second-inning home run by Kayla McCoy was one of two hits in the game as sixth-seeded LIU Post edged No. 2 seed Southern New Hampshire University 1-0 in the winner's bracket of the NCAA Division II Softball Championship East Regional Saturday at Penmen Field. The Pioneers improve to 32-15-1 and play again Sunday at 1:30 pm, while the Penmen face either Queens (N.Y.) College or Saint Anselm College in a 4:30 elimination game Saturday.
McCoy, the first baseman, lifted a fly ball down the left field line in the second inning for her fourth home run of the season and what proved to be the game's lone run.
Southern New Hampshire mustered just one hit against Ashley Martin, the East Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year, who tossed her second straight shutout, a single in the top of the second by Erin Morrissey (Commack, N.Y.). Martin struck out two and walked three.
Ali Maloof (Norwood, Mass.) was the hard-luck loser for Southern New Hampshire, striking out nine and allowing just the home run to McCoy without walking a batter. She retired the final 13 batters she faced following the home run.
