Sophomore Sofia Morais (Porto, Portugal) and junior Lindsay Baum (N. Salem, N.Y.) won both their matches to lead the Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team to a 6-3 victory against Saint Anselm College on Friday afternoon at the Saint Anselm Tennis Courts.
Morais teamed with graduate student Abla Chadli (Rabat, Morocco) for an 8-0 shutout of Tess Malerbi and Meghan Golden at No. 1 doubles to get the match started out on the right path for the Penmen. After Saint Anselm tied it due to an injury retirement at No. 2 doubles, the duo of Baum and sophomore Rachel Wagner (Framingham, Mass.) recorded an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles against Caroline Templer and Bridget Keefe.
Morais pulled out a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win over Malerbi at No. 2 singles, while Baum was a 6-0, 6-0 winner against Templer at No. 5. Sophomore Anna Sala (Matadepera, Spain) also captured a 6-0, 6-0 decision in the No. 3 slot against Golden.
Wagner lost a marathon of a match at No. 4 singles to Kaitlin Hughes, 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 12-10.
In the most anticipated match of the day, Jess Perkins took the first set of the top singles flight, 6-3, while Chadli battled back to tie it with a 7-5 triumph. Darkness then crept in and the match was suspended. The match was picked back up Tuesday afternoon, with Chadli winning a 10-6 tiebreaker to win the match.
