Senior Ashley Loft (Leysin, Switzerland) took five games from the 17th-ranked player in the nation, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team was defeated by 12th-ranked New York Institute of Technology, 9-0, Saturday at the Allard Center.
Loft fell to Alessia Rossetti, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 1 singles, but played very well against the nationally-ranked player. Loft held serve three times and battled Rossetti in a number of tight games.
Loft had earlier teamed with freshman Anna Sala (Matadepera, Spain) to take on Rossetti and Justyna Krol at No. 1 doubles, but the Penmen lost to the eighth-ranked doubles team in the country, 8-3.
Sala dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 2 singles to Melanie Benyadi – the 38th-ranked singles player in the country.
Notes:
- Save for Loft's performance against Rossetti and sophomore Lindsay Baum (No. Salem, N.Y.) losing to Alexandra Borgenhoff, 8-2, at No. 5 singles, the Bears only lost one game in the rest of singles action.
- NYIT is No. 1 in the latest ITA East Regional rankings, while the Penmen sit in seventh.
