Freshman Kristin Wilder (Framingham, Mass.) scored a career-high six goals to lead the Southern New Hampshire University women's lacrosse team to a 16-3 triumph against Saint Michael's College on Saturday afternoon at Larkin Field.
Senior Alexa Allen (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) matched Wilder's point output as she scored two goals and matched career highs in assists (4) and points (6). Junior Ellen Decker (Foxborough, Mass.) posted five points on two goals and three assists, while sophomore Alexa Bedell (Londonderry, N.H.) added three goals and a helper for four points.
Southern New Hampshire set the tone early as Allen set up goals from Bedell and Wilder to stake the Penmen to a 2-0 lead just 5:32 in. Steph Bonewald cut the deficit in half just under four minutes later, but SNHU would close the half with six straight goals, including two from Bedell, who also added an assist, to make it 8-1 at the break. Decker contributed a goal and two assists during the stretch, while Allen kicked in a goal and a helper.
Freshman Mary Beth Sweeney (Foxborough, Mass.) opened the second-half scoring less than five minutes in with Wilder tallying two more 54 seconds apart to expand the run to nine straight and stretch the lead to 11-1.
Bonewald added her second of the game at 19:51, but three straight goals from Allen, freshman Jackie Richardson (Tyngsborough, Mass.) and Wilder all but sealed the game at 14-2 with 11:09 on the clock. Decker and Wilder followed a Saint Michael's goal from Emily Byrne to cap the scoring.
Notes:
-Junior goalkeeper Nicole Kennedy (Windham, Maine), the two-time reigning Northeast-10 Goalkeeper of the Week, turned away five of the eight shots that came her way to run her record to 3-1. Grace Gunning made 11 saves for the Purple Knights.
-Southern New Hampshire outshot Saint Michael's, 34-9, and held a 15-6 advantage in draw controls.
-The 3-1 start is the best to a season for the Penmen since 2007.
