Junior right-hander Ben Criscuolo (Branford, Conn.) tossed eight shutout innings, and graduate student Mike Mastroberti (Ramsey, N.J.) drove in three runs to lead No. 11 Southern New Hampshire University to a 5-2 victory over Adelphi University in nonconference baseball action at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida on Monday.
Criscuolo improved to 3-0 after scattering five hits, striking out two and walking just one batter. Mastroberti finished 3-for-5, and junior Zach Goldstein (Merrick, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases.
Brett Malm and Michael Stack each went 2-for-4 with a double to lead the Panther offense, while Tyler Warshefskie added a pair of base hits in three trips to the plate.
After Criscuolo held the Panthers off the board through their first two trips to the plate, the Penmen pushed across the game's first run in the home half of the second. Graduate student Ryan Gendron (Nashua, N.H.) was hit by a pitch with one out before sophomore Derek Bauer (Millis, Mass.) worked a walk. Freshman Kevin Alexy (Newton, Mass.) laced a line drive single into right to load the bases, and junior Cam Oliveira (Tewksbury, Mass.) brought in Gendron after taking a pitch off the elbow.
Southern New Hampshire built a 3-0 lead in the fourth on a two-run single by Mastroberti. After Oliveira led off the frame with a bunt single, walks to Goldstein and classmate Manny Cruz (Wolcott, Conn.) loaded the bases with one away. Mastroberti stepped in next and lined an 0-2 offering into right that scored both Oliveira and Goldstein.
The Penmen added a run in the bottom of the seventh on a pickoff attempt that sailed down the line in right before Goldstein and Mastroberti teamed up to provide an insurance run in the eighth. Goldstein smacked a base hit into left before stealing to second and advancing to third on a throwing error. Two batters later, Mastroberti delivered another knock into right that plated Goldstein and increased the cushion to five runs.
Adelphi attempted to mount a comeback in ninth, as a hit-by-pitch and a double by Malm put runners on second and third with one away. An RBI groundout by Kory Cassara followed by a two-bagger off the bat of Stack made it 5-2, but sophomore Jake Walkinshaw (Seymour, Conn.) entered the game and retired the only batter he faced to pick up his fourth save of the season.
Notes:
- Mastroberti extended his personal hitting streak to six-straight games, while Goldstein recorded two hits for the fifth consecutive contest.
- Southern New Hampshire is 13-0 for the first time since the 2012 season, when it captured the NCAA East Regional crown and advanced to the College World Series.
- The Penmen racked up nine hits and committed one error while the Panthers managed seven hits and posted a pair of fielding miscues.
