Senior Alexa Allen (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) registered a career-high seven points and freshman Kristin Wilder (Framingham, Mass.) scored six goals as the Southern New Hampshire University women's lacrosse team recorded a 17-11 victory against in-state rival Franklin Pierce University on Saturday afternoon at Larkin Field.
Allen matched her career best with four goals and added three assists, while Wilder scored five-plus goals for the third straight contest. Sophomore Alexa Bedell (Londonderry, N.H.) potted three goals and handed out a pair of assists for five points, with junior Ellen Decker (Foxborough, Mass.) dishing a career-high four assists. Fellow junior Casey Duggan (Framingham, Mass.) notched three goals.
The opening 11:27 featured four lead changes and seven ties before Franklin Pierce grabbed the first two-goal advantage of the game at 9-7 with 6:01 to go before the break. Southern New Hampshire responded in a big way, however, scoring the final four goals of the half, including Wilder's fourth of the stanza with just one second on the clock, to take an 11-9 lead at halftime. Duggan scored two goals during the stretch, while Allen tallied a goal and two assists.
The teams traded scores to open the second half before a combination of draw control wins, solid possession and a rock solid defense kept the Ravens off the board for the remainder of the game. The Penmen closed the scoring with four straight, including two from Bedell, who also earned an assist during the span.
Notes:
-The Penmen keep pace with the 2009 team, which began the season 9-3, for the best 11-game start to a campaign.
-SNHU, which has captured six of its last eight overall, matches its longest winning streak of the season with its third straight victory
- Junior goalkeeper Nicole Kennedy (Windham, Maine) turned away 14 of the 25 shots she faced, while Denise Hunt made 20 saves for Franklin Pierce.
-Southern New Hampshire outshot Franklin Pierce, 46-28, including 19-9 in the second half, while also holding a 19-10 advantage in draw controls, including 7-2 in the final frame.
-Bedell owns an eight-game point streak, during which she has amassed 25 goals and 14 assists for 39 points.
- Wilder scored five-plus goals in a game for the eighth time this season and leads the Northeast-10 in goals (50), while ranking second in points (55).
-Bedell ranks fourth in points (49), while Allen is third in assists (22). Kennedy is leading the conference with 114 saves and is third in both wins (8) and ranks third in save percentage (.502).
