Freshman Ashley Elder (Bristol, Conn.) of the Southern New Hampshire University women's track and field team finished No. 11 in the women's discus throw at the 2016 New England Outdoor Championships at Jess Dow Field on the campus of Southern Connecticut State University.
Elder sent the discus a distance of 38.05 meters in the final, which was less than half a meter outside of the top-10. She was the second-highest Division II finisher behind Olivia Lane (42.42 meters) of the University of New Haven in an event that featured 23 student-athletes from 17 institutions across NCAA Divisions I, II and III. University of Massachusetts-Boston's Taylor Jazmine Smith took home the top overall spot with a distance of 45.05 meters, and she was followed by Naloti Palma-Kaluma of Westfield State University (43.78 meters) and Central Connecticut State University's Chelse Terry (43.44 meters) in the top-three.
Three Southern New Hampshire University student-athletes took part in the New England Outdoor Championships. Juniors Sahara Brown (Center Barnstead, N.H.) and Laura O'Hanlon (Dedham, Mass.) were in action on Friday in addition to Elder's performance on Saturday. Brown and O'Hanlon each posted 10th-place finishes in the javelin throw and 5000-meter run, respectively.
Notes:
- Northeastern University captured the women's team championship after combining to score 140 points in 22 events. The Huskies were followed by the University of Rhode Island (92.60), Southern Connecticut State University (67), Sacred Heart University (51) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (46) in the top-five.
